What is 'Animash'?

The term "Animash" is derived from from three words: "animation", "animal" and "mashup". Animash videos are sometimes known as Animash Music Videos (AMVs), which are not to be confused with Anime Music Videos (which are also AMVs), although there is a small amount of overlap between the two. An Animash video is a type of fan-made music video (FMV), edited together using clips from various pre-existing sources, although most "Animashers" (Animash MV Editors) prefer using footage from animated movies about talking animals made by companies such as Disney, DreamWorks and more. 2D animated sources are usually preferred, but 3D (generally CGI; occasionally stop-motion) sources may also be used at times.

When watching an Animash video, you'll find various clips of animal characters from animated movies played along with a track of audio, usually music. But there are also Animashers that do not just use animals, but also use movies about human characters as source footage. The emphasis is typically on animals even when humans are present, however. Imagery from TV shows and other miscellaneous sources may occasionally be used, but movies are usually preferred. Anime may or may not be included; the art styles of Japanese animation tend to be different enough from those of Western animated works such as Disney movies they they are often considered very jarring.

Some Animashers like to make crossovers. With these, they take two or more characters from different footage sources and edit it to make it look like as if they are in the scene at the same time. This typically involves masking and/or chroma key effects, which are used to take a character from one scene and place them into another scene. This can turn out to be something original and creative, which often tells a completely different story from the plots of both sources.

When characters are placed into new environments and situations, types of imagery which would otherwise not be included in the video may be utilized as backgrounds; for instance, the animated characters may be put into live action footage or photographs.

A lot of Animashers likes to edit Animashes with a wide range of different kinds of audio in their videos. These include Pop, Rock, Jazz, Rap and any other musical genre. There are Animashers who like to edit using songs in foreign languages or even instrumentals. Some might even edit with other kinds of audio, like quotes only.

Some people may interpret Animash as meaning a video with anything animal-related from any source, regardless of whether it's live-action or animated. This is technically not an Animash. If it is an FMV with live-action footage edited together with animated footage, it is referred to as a "multifandom" FMV. Videos using exclusively animated sources with very few or no animal-related clips are usually called "Non/Disney" (or simply "multifandom") and are rarely considered to count as Animashes. A video using nothing but anime is called an "Anime Music Video" (often abbreviated as "AMV") and can also be considered a multifandom video if multiple sources are used, and can even be Animash if the sources are mostly or entirely animal-related ones such as Kimba the White Lion, One Stormy Night, and Ginga Densetsu Weed. Sources featuring live-action humans interacting with animated animals, such as Alvin and the Chipmunks, Pete's Dragon and Who Framed Roger Rabbit, are a bit of a grey area, but are usually considered to be viable sources for Animashes or other videos focusing on animation if the clips focus heavily on the animated characters and these sources are used sparingly.

Some Animashes are MEPs. This stands for Multiple Editor Project. In those cases, several Animashers get together to make individual segments which are then put together to make one video. One person, the "host", sets the rules that everyone follows, as well as providing the audio and dividing it up into several different segments which other people choose from. Common rules include finishing your part by a certain day, making every segment a crossover between different sources, banning certain sources such as My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, being an experienced editor, putting text on screen, or using certain color schemes or effects. The people participating may be anyone who finds out about the project or only the host's friends or people in a certain group (often called a "studio"). MEPs occur both in and out of the Animash community, and the term "MEP" is also sometimes used by artists to refer to videos made using original artwork drawn by the participants, which are otherwise made in roughly the same way.
